Dear all,
To ensure laboratory safety during winter vacation for the stability and safety of campus, general lab safety guidelines are provided as follows:
1. Unauthorized personnel is not permitted (children, solicitors) to enter labs. Cold weather precautions are advised to prevent slippery, freezing and falling objects, etc.
2. Strengthen the safety management of hazards in laboratories for hazardous chemicals, high temperature and high pressure facilities, compressed gas cylinders, radiation sources, biological risk factors, lasers, high-voltages, strong electricity and magnetism, etc., and implement custody policies; standardize the temporary storage and management of hazardous wastes at experimental sites; strengthen the safety management of electricity, gas and water use in laboratory, especially for gas cylinders, heating equipment, refrigerators and other facilities that are prone to fire or explosion hazards, and strengthen the responsibilities of person in charge.
3. Strengthen compliance with laboratory regulations, strictly implement safety operation procedures, and ensure personal protection (wear lab coats, gloves, goggles, etc.) equipment are properly wear. It is forbidden to eat, cook, sleep overnight, or use electric heaters in laboratories. Implement daily cleaning and safety inspection, and shut doors and windows, water, electricity and gas before leave.
4. Strengthen the management of experimental safety, especially experiments affected by low temperatures, as well as antifreeze precautions of experimental equipment and chemical reagents.
5. It is strictly forbidden to overload electricity in laboratories and illegal use of electrical appliances. Electric vehicles and their batteries are not allowed in laboratories.
6. It is forbidden to use open flames in sites with fire, explosion and other dangers; pay attention to the maintenance and use of emergency facilities such as fire extinguishers, explosion prevention, and emergency eyewash and shower.
7. Strengthen the safety management of controlled chemicals, and the safe use and storage of dangerous chemicals such as precursor to poison, explosion, flammable (such as ethanol, petroleum ether, ether), and explosive chemicals.
8. Experimental hazardous waste should be labeled and placed in a safe area according to regulations, and shall not be mixed with household waste or directly poured into the sewer.
9. The compressed gas in gas cylinders is a hazardous chemical and should be properly placed and stored to prevent collision or leakage. For cylinders that are not in use or are empty, be sure that the main valve is closed to prevent gas leakage. Overdue and waste gas cylinders should be disposed of in time and should not be stored in the laboratory.
10. Complete application of laboratory use during 2023 winter vacation, and obtain the consent of the supervisor for overnight or high-risk experiments, and make sure 2 people present on site.
All institutions should pay greater attention to laboratory safety during winter vacation, strengthen safety responsibility, and establish effective accident prevention and control measures as well as emergency response plans.
Have a nice winter holiday!
