Since the start of the fall semester of 2021, the laboratory safety management of university has been progressing steadily and orderly. In order to further strengthen laboratory safety culture, improve the safety awareness and skills of all staff and students, and effectively prevent laboratory safety accidents, the EHS Department invited the director of the Office of Safety and Environmental Protection, Laboratory and Equipment of East China University of Science and Technology, Professor Hongyong Xu, Deputy Director of the Division, conducted a speech on laboratory safety culture in Bldg. 5-103 lecture hall of the School of Physical Science and Technology (SPST) on September 23, 2021. This lecture training serves as the laboratory safety education for the 2021th graduate student of SPST. The Director of Environmental Health and Safety Department Wang Dongming, Assistant Director Li Ruiqing, Researcher Liu Haiming of the SPST, and more than 200 teachers and students participated in the training.
The theme of Dr. Xu's lecture is A Loving Laboratory Safety Culture. He focused on strengthening laboratory safety awareness, analyzed a large number of chemical laboratory accident cases from homeland and abroad, combined with the information obtained from the on-site investigation of some laboratories, analyzed the direct cause of the accident, summed up experience and lessons, and elaborated on laboratory safety. The importance of hidden danger investigation and rectification. Later, Dr. Xu explained in vivid language how to use chemical reagents to read chemical safety technical specifications, how to evaluate potential risks and reduce risks in experiments, understand the safety knowledge of the use of gas cylinders, and control the use of flammable chemicals to prevent secondary occurrence Accidents, the correct use of personal protective equipment, the correct use of eye washes and other safety awareness training and methods.
Director Wang Dongming introduced Dr. Hongyong Xu to all attendees before the lecture, and emphasized the importance of training laboratory safety awareness.
Dr. Xu emphasized the importance of risk assessment of experimental projects. Risk assessment revolves around the principles of RAMP: Recognize Hazards, Assess the Risks of Hazards, Minimizehe Risks of Hazards, and Prepare for Emergencies. It is an important part of laboratory safety culture. At the same time, Professor Xu proposed how to reduce dimensionality and build a laboratory safety management system, and explained the importance and methods of establishing a safety culture and arousing the safety awareness of every teacher and student.
Dr. Xu pointed out that the causes of laboratory safety accidents may be more complicated, but many of them are due to the lack of awareness of laboratory personnel and improper operations that cause safety hazards. If the surrounding safety hazards are found, they should be corrected and stopped in time. Don't wait for the accident to happen before regretting it. Laboratory personnel should improve safety awareness, strengthen safety knowledge learning, help and remind each other, eliminate potential safety hazards in the bud, kindly remind and stop others' unsafe operations and behaviors, is the real "loving laboratory safety culture".
