2020 Training on the Safety Issues of University Chemical Laboratory and Counter Measures

University chemical laboratory personnel are often exposed to toxic and hazardous substances. In recent years, public emergencies caused by malfunctioning chemical laboratory equipment, lack of self-protection awareness and inadequate protective measures have occurred from time to time, and more and more university laboratory personnel have begun to pay attention to their occupational health and safety.



In order to further enhance the safety awareness of laboratory personnel, strengthen emergency response capabilities, and protect the wellbeing of all staff and students, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the School of Physical Science and Technology specially invited Zhang Yaoting, deputy dean of Shanghai Institute of Occupational Disease for Chemical Industry, to give a lecture on safety issues of chemical laboratories. The training was held in the lecture hall on the afternoon of Dec.20th, 2020. More than 150 laboratory safety representatives, faculty and students attended the training. The training session was hosted by Wang Dongming, Director of the EHS Office. Researcher Liu Haiming from the School of Physical Science and Technology introduced the lecturer at the beginning.

 



With the speech title of Research on the Problems and Countermeasures of University Chemistry Laboratory, the deputy dean Zhang Yaoting started from the case study of university laboratory accidents, and then reviewed the characteristics of university chemical laboratories, common problems in safety management and countermeasures, occupational health and safety, etc.  Explained in detail pertinent laws and policies of production safety, especially on Production Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China.


       

Through this training, the participating staff and students further enhanced their laboratory safety awareness, and consolidated safety knowledge about laboratory chemicals, which is instrumental to further strengthen the management of laboratory safety, and safeguarding the overall wellbeing of faculty and students.
