  • 高压气瓶确认钢瓶固定链牢固,远离窗户、可能进水区域;

Dear Faculty, Researchers and Students,

According to meteorological forecast, Typhoon “Champi” will bring strong wind and heavy rainfall to the city from this afternoon (Oct 23) to daytime Oct 25. Laboratories contain hazardous chemicals, high-pressure gas cylinders, precision instruments, cryogenic equipment and biological samples, which face high risks of water intrusion, power failure, falling debris and secondary hazards. To prevent accidents such as water flooding, electric shock, chemical spillage, equipment damage and sample loss, all lab users shall strictly follow the safety requirements below:

  1. Doors, Windows & Outdoor Fixtures Lock all laboratory doors and windows securely. Inspect and reinforce exterior glass, exhaust brackets, external sensors and air-conditioning units. No glassware, reagent bottles or tools shall be placed on windowsills or outer ledges to avoid falling hazards.

  2. Electrical Equipment & Precision Instruments

  • Suspend high-risk and long-duration continuous experiments before the typhoon. Shut down large instruments including chromatographs, mass spectrometers and centrifuges as appropriate. For equipment that must keep running, complete risk assessment in advance, prepare emergency response plans and keep relevant records.

  • Cut off power for heaters, stirrers, pumps and ordinary sockets. Only critical equipment such as ultra-low temperature freezers and biosafety cabinets may remain powered after verifying UPS backup capacity.

  • Check distribution boxes and floor sockets for water seepage. Deploy water barriers in low-lying labs.

  1. Hazardous Chemicals, Gas Cylinders & Waste Place water-sensitive, corrosive and oxidizing chemicals on raised shelves away from windows and drains, with secondary containment trays in good condition. Secure high-pressure cylinders with restraints. Seal waste liquid and solid waste containers tightly against rainwater inflow.

  2. Biological Samples & Cryogenic Assets Monitor ULT freezers and liquid nitrogen dewars. Verify UPS runtime and backup LN₂ supply, and prepare contingency plans for valuable biological samples in case of power outage.

  3. Emergency Supplies & Drainage Check emergency kits: sandbags, water barriers, absorbent pads, PPE, emergency lights. Clear floor drains in advance to prevent backflow of rainwater. Building management shall activate severe weather emergency response for lab zones.

  4. On-site Safety Rules Keep track of weather alerts. Do not stay near windows or balconies to watch or film the storm to avoid broken glass and falling debris. Evacuate promptly when wind and rain intensify. Never wade through flooded areas or touch submerged electric facilities.

  5. 24/7 Emergency Contacts Campus Emergency Hotline: 20685110 Campus Maintenance Hotline: 20685112 In case of flooding, chemical spill, electric hazard or fire, evacuate first and notify your PI, school EHS team and the emergency lines immediately.

Do not resume laboratory work until a full safety inspection confirms no water intrusion, leakage or electrical hazards after the typhoon warning is lifted.
